Welcome to episode four of Sketchbook Stories.

In this series I will open up the pages of my personal sketchbooks and tell you the stories behind the sketches. I will also show you how the sketches are created and provide some handy tips for your own sketchbooks along the way!

Today we are looking at a page from a large watercolour sketchbook, where I created some illustrations from my book Sketchbook Challenge.

To carry out this exercise yourself you will need:

  • A sketchbook (ideally with thicker paper suitable for wet media)
  • Some water
  • Watercolour paint
  • A paintbrush (or two!)
  • A pencil
  1. Start by drawing a glass or cup shape in your sketchbook using pencil.
  2. Then using a paintbrush just loaded with water, mark out the area where the liquid in the glass would be.
  3. Once that area is wet, load the brush with some watercolour paint and start to add pigment into the wet area.
  4. Watch as the colour spreads across the water.
  5. You can also try blending several colours together in one image.

Have a lot of fun with this.
